Abstract

Regionalisation appeared as an aspiration of some states to arrange at a broader level their trade, political and legal relations by making agreements with each other, this primarily including their neighbours. Regional associations and integrations are created in various forms ranging from preferential trade agreements, free trade zones, customs associations and unions to common markets and economic unions. Realising the benefits resulting from the elimination of barriers in trade some countries established regional organisations within which they have gradually liberalised their mutual trade. In this way, they have developed their economies even more and have become an example of successful co-operation. For many years, the Western Balkans or actually South-Eastern Europe has been in the focus of political and economic interest of the European Union member countries. According to the EU recommendations, the countries that aspire to the Union membership are encouraged to create free trade zones in their territories. Serbia, too, has realised what benefits could be gained from regionalisation. Therefore, it has started to take steps leading towards the accession to the European Union, which is at present the best institutionally organised regional association in the world. In accordance with the neighbourhood policy, Serbia has participated in several negotiations and signed a few multilateral co-operation initiatives in the Western Balkans. One of the latest is the Central European Free Trade Agreement (CEFTA). CEFTA is expected to exert a strong impact on the mutual trade of the countries in the region, to enable the establishment of a better co-operation among the states in the region and their common road to the European Union integration.
