Abstract
Modern media has great influence on social and state processes, so it is important to regulate the functioning of their work. In this regard, Republic of Serbia has established a Regulatory Body for Electronic Media (REM), an independent regulatory body in the field of media, of great importance to media, citizens and the entire legal system. Therefore, this paper is focused on the legal status of REM, current problems in its functioning and possible directions for improving its work. In this sense, the main part of the analysis relates to the independence of REM and its relation with other public authorities. Special attention was paid to the conditions and procedure of election of the members of the REM Council, which is its main body. The analyses also include practical aspects of legal powers entrusted to REM. In some places, author has outlined the comparative legislation and offered recommendations for normative and practical overcoming of challenges and problems that may arise in the work of this body.
