This paper presents an attempt to illustrate very complicated relations between Serbia and the European Union over the last decade and a half. It is important to note that trough the SAP, Serbia, as a country, changed its status and formal name three times. After democratic changes in October 2000, the relations between the EU and Serbia, as a part FRY, began to normalize. SRY formally ceased to exist in June 2002 and Serbia and Montenegro then formed a new, successor state called the State Union of Serbia and Montenegro. In October 2005, Serbia, as a part of the State Union, started negotiations for the Stabilization and Association Agreement (Chapter I). After the referendum held in May 2006 and withdrawal of Montenegro from the State Union, Serbia has continued its path towards the EU as an independent country, the Republic of Serbia. As such Serbia signed the Stabilization and Association Agreement (SAA), was granted a status of a candidate country and a date of the opening of negotiations (Chapter II). As regards the harmonization of the Serbian legislation with the acquis communautaire, one of the most important obligations that Serbia undertook by singing the SAA, the analyses show that while Serbia has aligned its legislation with the acquis communautaire to a large extent, the legislation is still not efficiently implemented in practice (Chapter III).
